Healthy School Policy
The key rule is respect for the school and each other. Specifics are as follows.
Attendance: Students are asked to sign a contract that outlines days of attendance. Those days agreed to are the only days the student can attend. Days may be removed if the student is meeting the contract. Days may be earned back by showing regular attendance and completion of work. Students need to arrive on time (the top of the hour) and only leave when the current class is finished. This is usually ten minutes before the top of the hour. Students from other schools taking a course at Vermilion Outreach can come when their regular class at the other school is over and leave in time to attend their next regular class however we would ask that they do so quietly so as to not disturb other students.
Work Ethic: When attending school, students must be on task and working. Weekly goals should be met unless there is a legitimate reason why they have not been met.
Cell Phone Use: We strive to create a situation similar to a place of work. Cell phones should not be a distraction. There can be consequences if a cell phone is not used in an appropriate way. Students are allowed to use the school phone if they ask for permission and keep the call brief.
Dress Code: Students are allowed to dress in the manner that they choose as long as it is appropriate. Students are not allowed to wear clothing that has offensive logos or printing on them
Drugs/Alcohol: Drugs or alcohol are not to be found in or on students while they are at school or on field trips. Students disregarding this policy are subject to suspension and / or expulsion. Students who have a strong odour of either drugs or alcohol may also be suspended. If students are suspended for any of the above reasons, attending meetings with Alberta Health Addiction Services is required as well as a parent meeting in order to resume attending the Vermilion Outreach School.
Bullying: Under no conditions is bullying allowed by anyone attending the Vermilion Outreach School. This includes verbal, emotional, and physical bullying. Students involved in any type of bullying will be suspended and/or expelled and required to take a bullying awareness workshop prior to resuming attendance.
Smoking: Students are not allowed to smoke in the school nor on the school property. E-cigarettes are not allowed in school nor on the property.
Energy Drinks: Students are not allowed to consume energy drinks on school property. There is no evidence that they help students learn and they have been found to be harmful in many different areas.
Skateboards: For safety reasons students are not allowed to skateboard on the school property.
Parking: Students can park in the parking lot east of the school however driving behaviours must be safe.
Language: Students must refrain from using inappropriate language.
Emergency and Safety Procedures
Fire: In the event of fire students are to leave the building using the nearest exit and meet in the Focus building immediately west of the school where attendance will be taken. Students and staff are not to return to the school until the fire department says it is safe to do so.
Medical: In a severe emergency the ambulance will be called. In a lesser emergency, staff on duty will drive an injured student to the hospital and contact the parents.
Disruptive Behaviour: As in any other school, any time a student or outsider is disruptive, the local police will be called.
